DTF Introduce Flame Retardant Polyester Films

DuPont Teijin Films Introduce Flame Retardant Polyester Films

Teijin®Tetoron® UF PET and Teonex® QF PEN Films UL Certified as VTM-0

LUXEMBOURG, October 28th 2014 –  – New flame retardant films from DuPont Teijin Films promise to help design engineers in the electronics, transportation, construction, and label industries deliver high performance at low cost.   The halogen-free, white Teijin®Tetoron® UF Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) films and the Teonex® QF Polyethylene Naphthalate (PEN) films combine chemical resistance, strength, and insulation properties with the VTM-0 flame rating available from UL’s UL 94 flame classification testing.

“We have applied our proprietary science to help our customers deliver high quality products for these cost sensitive industries,” said Scott Gordon, business development manager, DuPont Teijin Films.  “Traditional PET and PEN polyester films are well known for their performance and reliability characteristics, and these two new film types have combined those properties with the highly desired VTM-0 certification.

Other commercial film types offer inherent flame retardance, but often at a high price premium.   Most commercial polyester films are inherently resistant to heat, chemicals, and water absorption, however the typical flame classification rating is at the VTM-2 level or worse. Consequently PET polyester films have been used only in a limited range of electronics applications, or in some cases the PET’s flame retardance was achieved through the use of additives or coatings containing halogens, which are banned by many industries.

Both the Teijin®Tetoron® UF PET and Teonex® QF PEN films are white and halogen-free, and they are available globally from DuPont Teijin Films in thicknesses ranging from 25 – 250 microns.  Typical applications include insulating materials and labels for electronic products such as PCs, office equipment and batteries, plus flexible printed circuitry and lighting.  At thicknesses of 125 microns or more, the white PET and PEN films provide >90% diffuse reflectance across the visible wavelength spectrum, which is important for many LED Lighting applications that require durable and reflective flame retardant films.  For higher temperature applications, the Teonex® QF PEN film is capable of withstanding processing temperatures over 180C.

DuPont Teijin Films, a joint venture between DuPont and Teijin Limited, is the world’s premier producer of polyester films and related services for Healthcare, Alternative Energy, Durable Media, Electronics, Specialist Packaging, Electrical Insulation and Capacitors Industries and many more.   Only DuPont Teijin Films manufactures MYLAR® brand, MELINEX® brand, TEIJIN® TETORON® brand, and TEONEX® brand films.  Please visit our web site at www.dupontteijinfilms.com
