The current hot topic at the top of all packaging user's wish lists is the 3R's, Reduce, Recycle and Re-use. PET is the world's most recycled polymer and now DuPont Teijin Films introduce Mylar® rPET, a new innovative film which is the world's first heat-sealable polyester film that uses 30% Post Consumer Recyclate (PCR).
The significance of the development of Mylar® rPET is that post consumer recycled PET is being used through a complicated film production process enabling it to be re-used in a number of critical areas of primary food packaging.
The post-consumer recyclate included in the Mylar® film has been carefully selected from well-established bottle collection schemes, guaranteeing the quality and security of the material used. Rigorous procedures and full auditing ensure that the recyclate has verifiable origin and meets all the stringent food contact legislation.
Mylar® rPET can be used for a wide range of packaging applications, such as lidding for fresh produce, fruit and vegetables or ready meals and can be used for applications needing vertical and horizontal form-fill-seal or flowrapping. Mylar® rPET is a mono-material and can be used as a laminate replacement, providing solutions for down-gauging or further recycling possibilities.
The initial launch and surrounding publicity has created strong interest, not only in the packaging industry, but in other applications for PETF where increasing environmental concerns apply.
